We want more people to love sugar kelp so we decided to work on creating collective channels to help the kelp get to where it needs to go. We are guided by the principals that farmers should make a living wage, that consuming kelp should leave the planet better than before, and that our local region deserves access to this healthy and sustainable crop (and our local waterways deserve to reap the benefits). The Cooperative is run by 4 farmers but partners with any regional kelp farmer who meets our food safety standards and wants to be a part of Kelp Week.
We take a cooperative approach to all the stuff that happens once sugar kelp leaves the clean ocean waters of New England primarily through developing and executing the New England Kelp Harvest Week; coordinating marketing, product development, and sales efforts in order to create a pathway for emerging seaweed farmers in New England to make it work. We are always looking for sponsors to help fund these activities so the individual farmers do not have to.
